Becoming a Wonder of Reading School

“I can unequivocally state that The Wonder of Reading, with its principles of Renovate, Restock, and Read, is unmatched in its direct effect on student achievement." — School Assistant Principal Brad Rumble at Rosemont Avenue Elementary

The schools selected by The Wonder of Reading are passionate about reading and want to offer their students cutting edge resources in elementary school literacy.  The Wonder of Reading offers these resources through the 3R Program — Renovate, Restock, and Read.  In the first year of program implementation, we expand and renovate an elementary school’s library, making it more useful and more inviting to young students; we work with the school library committee to replace outdated and ruined books with $10,000 worth of new books to restock the library’s collection; and we work with the school to recruit and train volunteers to read one-on-one with students.  Volunteers read with their student for one hour each week during the school day for the entire school year.  As part of a comprehensive package designed to enhance literacy initiatives on an ongoing basis at the school, we also offer library maintenance and literacy grants, author visits, parent trainings, and library skills workshops.

The 3R Program is a collaboration between schools, the local community, and The Wonder of Reading.  For initial program implementation, each school selected must raise a minimum of $50,000, and The Wonder of Reading must raise $50,000.  Schools must also provide two connecting classrooms that will become the new library space, and we ask that schools recruit volunteers to become reading partners.

From fundraising through implementation, schools are full partners in the 3R Program.  Public elementary schools interested in applying to The Wonder of Reading should review our application guidelines to see if they meet program requirements.
